Mount
Rushmore National Memorial is situated near Keystone, South
Dakota. The mountain was named after Charles E. Rushmore, a
New York City Attorney. He was in the area in 1885.The
memorial sculpture was designed by Gutzon Borglum
(1867–1941). Four hundred workers helped him to carve out
the heads over a fourteen year period. They were finished on
the 4th of October, 1941. The sculptures are approximately
18 metres high and feature the faces of four former United
States presidents. They are from left to right: George
Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826),
Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln
(1809–1865). The park is managed by the USA National Park
Service. Approximately two million people visit the park
annually. It is one of the USA's most famous icons. |
